Crumhorn consort rehearsal

Expressions of interest during the "have a go" class (or see William or Katherina in the Ildhafn campsite). We'll practice some renaissance consort music, on recorder and then on crumhorn. We have limited instruments, so we'll take turns if necessary.

To participate, you'll need to be able to:

  • i.     play a recorder (or similar woodwind) - be quite familiar with recorder fingering - F and/or C
  • ii.    read music fluently

Have you ever wanted to try a crumhorn?

Crumhorns are one of the stranger renaissance instruments. They sound a bit like a duck, a bit like a tuned fart, and yet - played well, in consort - utterly glorious. Technically: they're wind-capped double-reed instruments. You blow into a wooden mouth-piece, rather than putting your lips directly onto the reed. The fingering is like a recorder. We'll have four crumhorns (as well as a few other renaissance wind instruments) and you're welcome to try them. All welcome (no experience needed).

Affordable Authenticity: Building a quality wardrobe from found and repurposed materials

Let's discuss training your eye: visual tell-tales that can help you decide what is useful for a variety of eras! We'll also cover fibre burn tests, and what to feel for if you're in a situation where taking a swatch isn't possible. I'll also offer common meterage charts for things like household linens (and their likely subsequent uses!). I'll also have examples of kit made using only repurposed items!
